17 Books I LOVED In 2017

Books, Lifestyle

Hi everyone!

This post is a really exciting one! I’ve been actually wanting to share my ‘2017 Favorites’  on my blog for ages, and I’ve finally decided to  do it! This was originally going to be a miscellaneous Favorites post but as soon as I realized how many book favorites I had, I just knew that I had to dedicate a whole blog post to it, otherwise I just wouldn’t be doing these amazing books justice.

As I’ve probably mentioned countless times on this blog, I absolutely LOVE to read. Books are very important to me. That is what makes this post so exciting! I read quite a bit last year, and from all of those books, I picked my TOP 17 to share with you all! (this was quite a hard task haha..) Unfortunately I wasn’t able to take the pictures of some of the books that I wanted to mention in this post, but they were so amazing so I wanted to add them in anyway!

The Legend series- Marie Lu

These books were my first introduction to the AMAZING author Marie Lu! I was super excited when I got my hands on the first book, and I was literally in awe of her writing the whole time. The plot is really gripping and intense but also really unique! I absolutely LOVED it! I simply CANNOT wait to read more of her books now!

The Book Thief- Markus Zusak

This book was one I had heard a LOT about and I must say, it definitely did not disappoint! When I first began reading I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but after the first couple of pages, I was dragged into the story and I just couldn’t stop reading until Death had finished his story. Markus Zusak is a GENIUS.

Lock And Key- Sarah Dessen

Sarah Dessen was on my list of “Must Read Authors in 2017′ and although I had already heard so much about her, I was still stunned by her writing and just the whole book in general. The characters were so.. real and honest. You could literally feel what they were going through. In fact during some points of the story, I felt as if I was the character. Definitely one of the best contemporary novels I’ve read.

Flawed and Perfect-Cecilia Ahern

I’ve already mentioned this book loads of times last year, (sorry ’bout that!) but I simply couldn’t resist adding it in! The plot and the characters and just the whole book in general was just AMAZING! It definitely deserves more recognition.

Girl Out of Water- Nat Luurtsema

This book had me cracking up the whole time I was reading it. In fact I’m about 70 percent sure that my sister thought I was going nuts haha.. I just couldn’t help it! This book is hilarious! It’s warm, funny and lighthearted, and the characters just immediately become like your friends! I loved every minute of it!

Magnus Chase and the Hammer of Thor- Rick Riordan

I just HAD to include a RR book! It was quite a struggle trying to pick which book I liked more-The Dark Prophecy or this one. I loved both books equally though! Although,I must say- the real reason I chose this one is because of the characters and their amazing friendship! I LOVED reading it!

Geek Girl Series-Holly Smale

I had originally only read the fifth book of this series and I LOVED it so much that I simply HAD to read the rest of the books! After I started, I just couldn’t stop! I really really enjoyed reading it! It is just a really warm, fun and lovable series. Even all of the characters are fabulous. Oh and Harriet Manners is now my new fictional best friend.(Sorry Nat!)

The Maze Runner series- James Dashner

I don’t know what I can type out to do these books justice? THEY WERE AMAZING! AS usual, when I first started reading these books I had NO idea what to expect but I loved it! Imagine going on adrenaline filled adventure camp, then multiply that feeling into a 100 and then you will have a small idea of what reading this book felt like. If you haven’t read it already, then you simply MUST read it as soon as you possibly can!

The Potion Diaries-Amy Alward

This book is one of those fun, fluffy sort of books that are PERFECT to finish reading in one sitting! It had adventure, potions and amazing characters and it was a really enjoyable read! I loved the plot and just the whole story behind the book and the characters. I read this while I was on holiday and I think that the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. ♥

A few other AMAZING books that I wasn’t able to take pictures of, but I still loved so much that I couldn’t bear to not include them are-

  • A Monster Calls- Patrick Ness (I had never ever cried SO much for a book.It was simply beautiful.)
  • The Kite Runner-Khaled Hosseini  (You can read my full review on it here)
  • A Library of Lemons-Jo Cotterill. (I LOVED IT!)

What do you think of these books?? Have you read any of them and if so, did you love them just as much as I did? Do you have any other AMAZING book recommendations that I missed out on? let me know in the comments down below! (oh, and what do you think of the pictures??)

Thank you so much for reading!

I’m FREAKING Out! | The Mid-Year Freak Out Tag!!

Hi everyone!

So recently, the lovely Sarah nominated me for an EPIC tag-The Mid-year Freak Out Tag! As soon as I saw the title, I knew it was perfect for me because I am internally freaking out! I mean…the year HAS flown by really quickly! 😂

Also, I know that I don't usually do tags as my 'post of the week' but I've got something very special planned for next month and this is a really fun tag so I decided to do it today!

I know I'm a tad bit late to the party.. but…it's always better late than never, right?

Side Note-unfortunately I'm not going to elaborate on the books very much because there are quite a lot of questions and if I fangirl over every book (which I probably will 😂) then this post would probably take about a month to write 😂 I hope that's alright with you all!

Anyway, Let the questions begin!

  • What's the best book you have read so far in 2017?

The BEST book? Well, that's quite a hard question so I'll just include a few of my favourites, because I simply cannot choose between them! 😍

*goes to Goodreads*

*forces self to pick only two*

*ends up picking four*

  • What's Your favourite sequel yet?

Hmmm this is quite a tough one too..But I think I'm going to go with…Magnus Chase and the Hammer of Thor! I loved every minute of it! 😍

  • What's a new release you haven't read yet but you really want to?

  • Most anticipated release for the second half of the year?

  • What was Your biggest disappointment?

I've got to say…I'm kind of stumped for this one's answer because thankfully all of the books that I've read this year have been great!! So…No disappointments! ☺️😁

  • Biggest surprise of the year?

I know I've already mentioned this book, but it truly was amazing! It really made me think and appreciate everything around me so much more!

  • Favourite new to you or debut author?

Definitely James Dashner! Oh and Tamora Pierce! 😍😍

  • Who's your new favorite character?

Okay, this is really really hard because I have so many so I'll just give you my top five!

  • Hassan from The Kite Runner (It's impossible to not like Hassan)
  • 'The Rat' from Unhooking the moon (She's adorable!!)
  • Samirah Al Abbas from Magnus Chase and the Hammer of Thor #GirlPower all the way!
  • Ilsa Hermann from The Book Thief (I loved how generous she was. Especially with her books!)
  • Thom from Alanna:The first adventure. (I believe he was just simply misunderstood!)
  • What's a book that made you cry?

  • What's a book that made you happy?

  • What's Your favourite book movie adaptation that you've seen this year?

I actually haven't watched any book-movie adaptations this year…so I don't really know?? One of my all time fave books, Wonder is being made into a movie and the trailer looks pretty good so maybe I'll watch that? 🙂

  • What's your favourite book blog post you have published this year?

My review on The Kite Runner! I don't know if I did it justice, but I know that I definitely worked really hard on it! 😍☺️❤ You can check it out here!

  • What's the most beautiful book you have bought/received this year?

This is definitely a really tough question for me, because I received quite a few gorgeous books this year. (mostly from my Mum! So Thanks Mum!! ❤) but I think I'll have to go with…
The Mother-Daughter Book Club Collection! I just LOVE LOVE LOVE the covers of all of the books!! They are all really unique and fun and just…Beautiful! 😍

  • And lastly, What are some books that you need to read by the end of the year?

Please prepare for a long list haha…

  • The Six of Crows
  • Perfect
  • The Trials of Apollo:The dark prophecy
  • Magnus Chase and the ship of the dead
  • Ink and bone
  • Strange the dreamer
  • A storm of Strawberries
  • The Girl of Ink and Stars

And many many more but those are on the top of my list! 😉😊

And as for the nominations…I'm nominating all of the bloggers who want to do this! I'm not nominating a list of specific bloggers to do this, because I am a bit late in doing this and because I want to know your answers to these questions!

So please answer your fave questions the comments down below (or on your blog) even if you aren't planning on doing this-because I'd love to read your answers!! ☺️

Thank you so so much again to the amazing Sarah for nominating me!! You must definitely check out her lovely blog if you haven't already! She's an awesome blogger and it's always a pleasure to read her posts!

P.S- The pictures of the book covers and the books do NOT belong to me. They belong to their original owners.

Why I ADORED The Kite Runner! | Book Review

Hi everyone!

First of all,I’m dreadfully sorry for my delay in publishing this post!! The holidays had just gotten super busy so I had barely any time to blog 😢😢 I’m really sorry about that!

But now I’m back for good and I have got a TON of fun stuff planned  (I feel really organized now) Including some really fun DIYs and some book recommendations… *waggles eyebrows mysteriously* Oh! and a full post dedicated to my new friend-my bullet journal! 😉❤ I’m still trying to come up with a good name for her so if you have any ideas, comment them down below!

Anyway, this post is a very exciting one because I’m finally reviewing the phenomenal literary masterpiece that is The Kite Runner.

A huge shoutout to the very lovely Mahriya for recommending this book to me,I had a blast reading it,thank you so much!

So before I properly begin (get ready for a TON of fangirling!),I’ll just give you a quick little summary of the book if you haven’t read it yet.

The Kite Runner is an amazing story that mainly follows an Afghan boy called Amir and his closest friend and servant-Hassan.Amir is the son of a wealthy Kabul merchant, a member of the ruling caste of Pashtuns. Whereas Hassan, his servant and constant companion, is a Hazara, a despised and impoverished caste. Their uncommon bond is torn by Amir’s choice to abandon his friend amidst the increasing ethnic, religious, and political tensions of the dying years of the Afghan monarchy, wrenching them far apart. But so strong is the bond between the two boys that Amir journeys back to a distant world, to try to right past wrongs against the only true friend he ever had. (Source-Goodreads)

I had very high expectations for the book and I was very excited to read it because all of the reviews on it were amazing, and so many people had recommended it to me that I couldn’t not read it. Luckily for me, my mum already had it so I could start reading it immediately. Thanks Mum! ❤

Even after that, when I started reading..I was still a bit surprised? But it was definitely a good surprised, the pace was just perfect and the amount of detail was also brilliantly done. There was never a dull moment.

I had to keep on reading and reading once I started and I couldn’t bear to stop because I was hooked! I also had that enthralled feeling that you get when you read a really amazing book, which should have been a warning for me but I still shed a TON of tears when I was reading it,because it was just so moving and it affected my heart. *sobs*

I have got to say that the characters in the book were very real. They had flaws and talents and you could actually empathize with them when they felt something which was AMAZING, and no matter how awful that the character’s actions were, you still pitied them.

Amir is the main character in the book and like all characters, he has quite a few flaws but his biggest one made him betray his best friend  and haunted him for the rest of his life.

To be honest, I don’t really know how to feel about Amir..during some parts of the book,I wanted to cry because I felt so sorry for him and during other parts.. well… let’s just say he was DEFINITELY NOT my favourite person in the book.

THAT HONOUR was awarded to Hassan. Hassan in one word is simply AMAZING! He was literally the perfect friend; loyal, honest and caring. I was rooting for him throughout the book and after him Sohrab (of course). Hassan is a Hazara which made him the servant of wealthy Afghans like Baba and Amir. He was also uneducated but he still used love it when Amir made up stories for him and he really enjoyed spending time with him.

I have mixed feelings about Baba as well. Baba is the father of Amir and he was a very indecipherable chacter. During some points of the book, he can be the nicest person ever and during other points (especially when it came to his son) you want to get all of the rotten fruit and vegetables in the world and throw them at him.

Rahim Khan on the other hand was great! Rahim Khan was one of Baba’s closest friends and he knew all of his secrets (which were later revealed in the book). He was the one who empathized the most with Amir and looked upon him as another son and supported him when he needed it the most. You could say that he was kind of like his mentor or his God-father.

My favourite parts in the book were all the ones when Hassan and Amir used to play together and of course the time when Amir made up his own story and narrated it to Hassan and when Hassan told him it was amazing which kickstarted Amir’s desire to write and make up stories.

The kite running contest was also one of my favourite parts of the book, I love how close both of them are and how loyal Hassan is to Amir!!

“For you a thousand times over”

But my favorite quote from the whole book (that made me shed a LOT of tears) would have to be this one :-

“There is a way to be good again”

I don’t think I had ever shed as many tears for this quote for any other book.

I don’t know why but it was just my happiness and sadness for both Amir and Hassan and just all that had happened was overwhelming and this quote just set me off.

I’m still not over it though! *cries*

Overall…  I would say that you definitely MUST read it if you haven’t already, because it a beautiful book about friendship, loyalty and hope and about knowing what is good and fighting for it. ❤

Also there a TON of AMAZING and very unexpected plot twists that will be thrown your way so if you are planning on reading it,get ready for an eventful journey! You will definitely not regret it because I LOVED it and I’m sure that you will too! Don’t forget to have a lot of tissues by your side!

Rating- ❤❤❤❤❤❤

SIX OUT OF FIVE HEARTS ( because it was that amazing haha)😍😉

Have you read The Kite Runner? If so,did you love it as much as I did? If not,are you planning to read it? I do hope so! let me know what you thought in the comments down below!

The Comments of the Week go to….

Thank you all so so much for all of  your lovely comments!! I had a TON of fun reading them and replying to them and it was quite struggle to pick only two ❤  You are all seriously the best! 😊

Don’t forget to grab your free wallpaper over at The Quote Corner! I initially wanted it to be a quote from The Kite Runner, but then I figured that not everybody would have read it, so I decided to do a classic quote instead! I hope that you like it!

Thank you so much for reading!

Smiles>Sadness | A short story on Positivity + 2 Days left!

Hi everyone!

Welcome to Day 2! Can you believe that there are only two days left?! I certainly can’t. Time really does fly, doesn’t it? haha… anyway if you want to enter there is still quite a bit of time left so Go Ahead! 😉

Anyway today I thought that I might write a little story on positivity! I don’t think I have mentioned this before on my blog but I Love to write. It is one of my favorite things to do but unfortunately for the past few weeks,I haven’t been writing very much at all and to get myself back into the swing of things,I thought that I might write a short story to share on my blog!

I’m actually awfully nervous to be posting this right now because as I mentioned earlier,I have never done anything like this before but hopefully you will like it anyway..? I do hope so!

Here we go!

They all stared at her. The new girl. It wasn’t because she was new or anything.. oh no-It was just because they had decided to make her their new victim.

I felt a pang of guilt. Not for being part of it or anything-I’m not that bad. But simply because I didn’t do anything to stop it or even warn her. The last time something like this had happened. I didn’t do anything to stop it. Nothing. Not a single word. I just watched them bully her,but not this time. This time I wouldn’t let it happen. I wouldn’t repeat my old mistake and I would stand up for what’s right.

At least that’s what I wrote in my diary on New Years Eve.The only thing that I could do now was simple. Right? that’s what I told myself anyway. It sounded a lot easier when I thought about it before.

I took a deep breath and marched over to her. And then I stared at her, suddenly at a loss for words. Surprisingly she merely raised an eyebrow and glared at me.

The first thing that I thought of when that happened was Wow!  How did she do that? I had tried to raise only one eyebrow countless times, but I always failed miserably each time and ended up looking like a clown. I grinned at her. Maybe she could teach me how she learnt to do it!

She stared at me then, startled. ” I’m Karla” I said in response to her silence. She nodded warily,”I know”

“You do?”

” Oh yes”

“Wha-But how? I mean aren’t you new? the girls told me-” I said stumbling over the words in my hurry to find out what she meant. She laughed and it was a pleasant sound to hear after hearing only taunts and jeers for the past few weeks.

” Aren’t you one of them?” she jerked her head towards my old ‘friends. “Being mean and stuff, I mean…why are you even talking to me?”

To say that I was startled after that would have been an understatement. I was shocked.
” I’m not with them” I said flatly. ” They are just…” I struggled to find the right words to describe ‘them’.

“How you know all this anyway?” I asked finally.

She ignored me. “Prove it then”

“If you aren’t a bully prove it.”

I suppose this might be the right time to explain what was going on. I had joined this school almost a year ago and in an attempt to ‘fit in’,I did many things that I’m not proud of. Like watching my ‘friends’ put other people down. They made them feel horrible about themselves and that in my opinion, is even worse than physical bullying because this affects you mentally and it hurts not your body but your heart.

Those people could have been my friends but I just threw all my chances away because that is what I thought mattered. Supporting my other friends.

But why support ‘friends’ who don’t do the same to you? ‘Friends’ who constantly put you down because they want to feel good about themselves. Those people aren’t your friends but they just pretend that they are.

And I was going to put a stop to it. Because those people who were bullied are wonderful. They are kind, generous and caring and they deserve to feel good about themselves. They deserve to smile. Everyone deserves to smile and nobody has the right to take that away from them. Nobody.

I finally had enough. I wasn’t going to let them get away with it anymore. I promptly turned around and then I tripped. It wasn’t very graceful and hardly the grand entrance to the battle that I was hoping for. Nevertheless I shrugged and walked towards them,They were laughing as usual-my face burned as I realized that they saw the whole thing and they were laughing at me.

At that moment I realized something else. There is no light without darkness and there is no happiness without sadness.I learnt a major life lesson right there. Why should I be a negative force instead of a positive one? Why can’t stand up for myself? Why shouldn’t I stand up for myself? And as I was thinking that I realized the only thing that was stopping me was myself. That and fear. Fear of being bullied like the others. Fear of being hated and fear of fear itself.

But fear can be confronted by hope and I had hope. I knew I wasn’t a bully and I had hope that I could stop ‘them’ from bullying others.

They were coming towards me and I squared my shoulders and walked towards them with a grin.

And the new girl watched the whole thing happen-smiling.

And that’s it! It’s a bit longer than I expected but I hope that you enjoyed it.

I decided to tackle one of the biggest things that make people lose their smiles-bullying and I want to tell every single one of you reading this, if you have been bullied or if you are going through bullying or even if you haven’t, always remember that you are strong and brave and that your smile can change the world. ( I know that sounds kind of cliché, but it is true!)

So keep smiling and keep spreading smiles! #SpreadSmiles

Also please do let me know what you honestly thought about my story! I’d love to know!

Do you write too? Are you interested in entering the contest or have you already entered? Are you as excited for the results as I am? Let me know in the comments!

Geek Girl By Holly Smale | Book Review

Hi everyone!

So, I saw this lovely book called ‘Geek Girl:Head Over Heels’ a few weeks ago and of course,I wanted to read it and when I read it,I loved it so much that I thought I’d do a review on it!

First of all the cover itself is Gorgeous! I know you should never judge a book by it’s cover but, I loved the look of it so much that I immediately wanted to read it. (I inserted it above, isn’t is stunning?)

But of course,a book is meant to be read and not just to admire the cover and let me just tell you that this one did wonders!

I hate book spoilers so I won’t give anything away but this book is full of fun twists and turns and loaded with awesome sauce.

Harriet Manners is the heroine of the book. She is fifteen years old and she finally has her life put together.Or so she thinks….

Harriet is a full on geek and is proud to be one!

She has a group of friends called team JINTH and she keeps planning many things but of course nothing ever goes her way….😂

I really love the fact that at the start of the book,a few facts are shared and the fact that many facts were shared throughout the book.It just made the book even much more fun and interesting to read.

I feel like I can definitely relate to Harriet because both of us love to organize things and have lists of lists and lists for the lists. ( I’m not even kidding😂)

I also love Harriet’s personality. She is one of those lovely book characters that you wish that you could meet someday..She is full of little quirks that I’m pretty sure all  of you can relate to.

Unfortunately for me,this was not the first book in the Geek Girl series but as soon as I read the first chapter,I was immediately swept into the world of Harriet Manners. Which was Awesome because I hate missing out on anything especially in a good book!

I laughed a lot as well when I was reading this especially at Harriet’s father’s letter to the burglars. I think that was probably one of  my favourite parts of the book. It wa really funny!

Harriet was and is a model who is also a geek.I did a bit of research on Holly Smale and I found out that she was a model too but she didn’t like it just like Harriet! I think that is something really cool.

This book is not only about embracing your true self and being who you want to be, it is about a journey of self discovery, friendship, family and courage. I loved it and I’m sure that you will too! It is definitely a must read for all teens and tweens!

You are going to laugh, smile and maybe even cry,but I can definitely guarantee that you will love it!

Also, Harriet Manners has now become one of my fictional role models. 🙂

And now…for the Rating!

Five out of Five hearts! The hearts stand for how much I loved the book. I know many people usually do stars but I figured that since I love almost every single book I read anyway,I might as well do this!

I really really hope you enjoyed my first ever book review! Hopefully the first of many! Let me know what you thought of it in the comments down below! Have you read this book? If so,what did you think?

Also,What do you think I should review next, ‘The Kite Runner’ or ‘The Star of Kazan’? I can’t wait to see what all of you think!

Keep dreaming!
